Endocrine Gland Flashcards
Pituitary gland
Follicle stimulating hormone- Stimulates the development of ovarian follicles and seminiferous
Melanocyte- simulating hormone- Stimulate the dispersion of pigment (melanin)
Thyroid stimulating hormone- stimulates thyroid gland
Anti- diuretic hormone- Stimulate the reabsorption of water in kidney
Luteinising hormone- stimulates ovulation and conversion of empty follicle into corpus luteum
Parathyroid gland
Parathormone- Acts in opposition to calcitonin- brings the removal of calcium from bone
- Increases reabsorption of calcium- raising calcium levels
Thyroid
- Throxine and tri-iodothyronine- Increases metabolic rate by stimulating cellular respiration- important role in growth, tissue development and differetiation
- Calcitonin- Inhibits excessive rise in blood calcium by suppressing removal of calcium from bone
Pancreas
- Glucagon- Increases blood sugar level by converting glycogen to glucose
- Insulin- Decreases blood sugar level by stimulating the formation of glycogen
Adrenal cortex
- Glucocorticoids (cortisone)- regulates carbohydrate metabolism
- Mineralosteroids (aldosterone)- Regulates salt and water metabolism
Adrenal medulla
- Adrenalin and noradrenalin- Prepare animal for emergency conditions (fight, flight, shock) by increasing heart rate and blood supply to skeletal muscles, lungs and liver and raising blood sugar level
Ovaries
- Oestrogens- Initiate and maintain female secondary sexual characteristics, intiate thickening of uterus lining, stimulates FSH (follicle-stimulating) and LH (luteinising hormone)
- Progesterone- Maintains thickening of uterus lining inhibits FSH and LH
Testes
Testosterone- Initiates and maintains male secondary sexual characteristics
