Endocrine Drugs Flashcards
these are the drug form of gluccorticord hormones, Powerful anti-inflammatory. Given PO or injections to treat inflammatory reactions, and systemic inflammation caused by autoimmune diseases.
Corticosteriod Drugs
includes hypothyroidism, in which too little thyroid hormone is secreted, and hyperthyroidism, in which too much hormone is secreted.
Drugs used to treat thyroid gland dysfunction
Increased levels of T3 and T4 cause ??. Anti-thyroid drugs treat thyrotoxicosis by inhibiting the production of T3 and T4 in the thyroid gland. These drugs can also be given prior to thyroidectomy.
Drugs for hyperthyroidism
drugs for hyperthyroidism
propylthiouracil
drugs for hyperthyroidism
propylthiouracil
1st type of antidiabetic drug that could be given orally. Structurally derived from anti-infective sulfonamide drugs, but do not have any anti-infective action. Stimulate the beta cells of the pancreas to produce more insulin.
Sulfonylurea Oral Antidiabetic Drugs
1st type of antidiabetic drug that could be given orally. Structurally derived from anti-infective sulfonamide drugs, but do not have any anti-infective action. Stimulate the beta cells of the pancreas to produce more insulin.
Sulfonylurea Oral Antidiabetic Drugs
the pancreas is still producing insulin, but in a smaller amount than normal. There is a resistance by the body cells to allowing the insulin that is produced to enter the cells. Diet, exercise, weight loss the amount of available insulin can be sufficient to keep the blood glucose level in normal range. If not oral antidiabetic drugs will be prescribed.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus
aka insulin dependent diabetes (IDDM) or juvenille-onset diabetes. the pancreas does not produce any insulin. treated with SC injected insulin
Type 1 diabetes mellitus
aka non-insulin dependant diabetes (NIDDM) or adult- onset diabetes. the pancreas produces to little insulin. The number of or sensitivity of insulin receptors on body cells is decreased. Treated with antidiabetic drugs (insulin may also be needed) Controlled diet and exercise is a must.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus
taken in the morning before eating. Therapeutic effect almost immediate.lower blood glucose level in 15 min. Effect lasts 2-12 hrs.AKA regular insulin or R.
Rapid (fast) acting insulin drugs
have large insulin crystals and contain added zinc. Don’t begin to lower the blood glucose level for over an hour. The therapeutic effect lasts 24 hours after one dose. AKA ultralente insulin.Belong to insulin analog drugs.
Long Acting Insulin Drugs
