Endocrine Disorders Flashcards
DM SxS
Acute: excess thirst/urination, fatigue, weight loss, vision problems, headaches/dizziness
Chronic: neuropathy, retinopathy, nephropathy, atherosclerosis
DM PT Implications
> 300: postpone exercise session, adjust insulin
< 100: snack and retest before exercising
-closely monitor BP if retinopathy, HTN
- Distal sensory screening for neuropathy
Hyperthyroidism
- weight loss, fatigue, excessive sweating, diarrhea, palpitations, hyperreflexia, tremor, and exophthalmos
- A fib, CHF, MI
(Graves Disease: autoimmune)
Hypothyroidism
- weight gain, hair loss, fatigue, bradycardia, constipation, anemia, carpal tunnel, fibromyalgia, depression
- Chronic: forgetfulness, myxedema, coma/death
Hyperparathyroidism
- bone decalcification
- pathologic fratures
- weakness/fatigue
- joint hypermobility
- peptic ulcer, pancreatitis
- renal calculi, renal failure
- memory, depression, personality changes
Hypoparathyroidism
- muscle weakness, pain, tetany
- Trousseau sign (carpal spasm)
- Chvostek sign (fascial spasm)
- Cardiac arrythmia
- seizure
** acute = life threatening
Hypercortisolism Types
Cushing’s syndrome: increased cortisol production by adrenal gland or an excess of corticosteroid medication
- Cushing’s disease: pituitary tumor = increased ACTH
Hypercortisolism Sxs
Moon shaped face, buffalo hump, truncal obesity, slender limbs, thinning of skin, hair loss
- myopathy
- hyperglycemia
- HTN and edema
- osteoporosis
Adrenal Insufficiency - Cortisol
- personality changes, bronze skin, hypoglycemia, susceptible to infection
Adrenal insufficiency - aldosterone
increased sodium secretion, dehydration, hypotension, diarrhea, abdominal pain
