ENDOCRINE - DIABETES INSIPIDUS Flashcards
1
Q
What is diabetes insipidus?
A
- Not enough ADH is being produced (cranial diabetes insipidus)
- OR kidneys don’t respond to ADH (nephrogenic diabetes insipidus)
2
Q
What is normally used to treat cranial diabetes insipidus?
A
vasopressin or desmopressin - both antidiuretic hormones
3
Q
What is normally used to treat nephrogenic diabetes insipidus?
A
Thiazide diuretics
4
Q
Desmopressin:
A
- more potent analogue of vasopressin
- side effects: hyponatraemic convulsions, water intoxication (water dilutes blood too much)
5
Q
What are the symptoms of diabetes insipidus?
A
- polyuria - more peeing
- polydipsia - more thirst
6
Q
What is SIADH?
A
hyponatraemia caused by inappropriate ADH secretion
7
Q
How do you usually treat SIADH?
A
- fluid restriction
- if this doesn’t correct hyponatraemia then use demelocycline or tolvaptan
