Endocrine 2 Flashcards
Why are endocrine organs richly supplied with blood vessels
Because hormones must be carried to their target organs by bloodsteam
Name 6 of the better known endocrine organs
- Pituitary body 2. Thyroid gland 3. Parathyroid gland 4. Pancreatic islets 5. Suprarenal (adrenal) glands 6. Gonads (ovaries, testes)
Describe pituitary body
small pea-sized, pea shaped structures; 2 glands, posterior and anterior
Where is pituitary body located?
base of brain near hypothalamus, base of cranial cavity floor.
Describe posterior pit. gl.
portion of which comes from & retains connection with base of brain.
Where are the hormones of the pit. gl. produced
Hypothalamus of brain
What are the hormones of the posterior pit.gl.?
- ADH-reabsorption of water within kidneys. (response to thirst. 2. Oxytocin-contraction of smooth muscle of uterus & milk production.
Where does anterior pit. gl. originate?
Roof of embryo’s mouth, attaches to posterior pit. gl.
How is anterior pit. gl. connected to hypothalamus?
A venous portal system
What are produced in the hypothalamus?
Chemical known as releasing factors
