ENDOCRINE Flashcards
Signs of hypoglycemia
diaphoresis, headache and slurred speech
For clients showing classic signs of hypoglycemia
give orange juice
Hyperglycemia can be defined
as blood glucose levels of higher than 120 mg/dl
Diabetic ketoacidosis is characterized by
flushed skin, fast deep labored perspiration with smell of acetone (fruity odor like over-ripped peach)
Diabetes insipidus
is caused by the lack of Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
ADH is responsible for
reabsorption of water in the kidneys
Kussmaul’s respirations are
deep, rapid breaths characteristic of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
Measuring urine and serum levels and osmolality are diagnostic test for
SIADH
The best time for a person with diabetes to exercise is
30 to 60 minutes after a meal
A person with Cushing syndrome
will have a high risk for fluid volume excess
Trousseau’s sign and Chovstek’s sign are
seen in hypocalcemia
If a nurse suspects tetany
Chovstek’s and Trosseau’s sign should be checked
The laboratory value to check for if Chovstek’s or Trosseau’s sign is
positive is calcium levels
Synthroid
medication used in treating hypothyroidism and it must be taken for life
Glycosylated hemoglobin
an important index of glucose control because it identifies the average glucose levels for the preceding 100 to 120 days
Addison disease
is a hypofunction of the adrenal cortex
This client will need to take steroid replacement throughout life
Addison disease patient
A tracheostomy set should be kept at the bedside of a patient returning from a
thyroidectomy surgery
If ADH is lacking, adequate reabsorption of water is prevented leading to diuresis
Client may urinate from 3 to 15 L per day leading to concentrated blood and dehydration.
Urine specific gravity is one of the diagnostic tests used to test for DI.
Urine specific gravity is less than 1.005 (normal is 1.010-1.025)
normal is 1.010-1.025
Urine specific gravity
SIADH (Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion) results from too much ADH in the body.
This causes excess water to be reabsorbed by the kidney
All diabetic patients should follow a daily foot care regimen, but it is particularly important for one with
peripheral vascular disease and peripheral neuropathy
