What causes the initial symptoms of hypoglycemia?
A
Tachycardia, sweat, hypertension
Epinephrine is released to try to increase BG levels

Does metformin cause hypoglycemia?

No!
It suppresses glucose production by the liver and decreases glucose absorption from the SI

Why is metformin stopped during the perioperative period?
A
Can cause lactic acidosis

What should you do if Metformin can’t be stopped 48 hours pre-op? (Emergency surgery etc).

Check lactic acid levels intraoperatively
