Endocannabinoid System Flashcards
1964
-THC Discovered at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam
DR. RAPHAEL MECHOULAM
-Discovered THC at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel in 1964
1973
-First Opiate Receptors Discovered in the Human Brain
OPIOID RECEPTORS
-Distributed Widely in the Brain, Can be Found in the Digestive Tract and Spinal Cord
1975
-Discovered the Human Brain has “Endogenous Opiates” or “Endorphins”
1988
- Allyn Howlett and William Devane Discover First Cannabinoid Receptors in the Brain
- Named Cannabinoid 1 Receptors or CB1
CANNABINOID 1 RECEPTORS or CB1
- Discovered by Researcher Allyn Howlett and Grad Student William Devane in 1988
- Found Mostly on Neurons in the Spinal Cord, Brain, and Peripheral Nervous System
- Hence Role of Cannabinoids on Pain Modulation, Memory Processing, Motor Control
- Also Found in Skin
- Evolved 600 Million Years Ago
1992
- Israeli Researchers Found an Endogenous Cannabinoid
- Named N-Arachidonoyl Ethanolamine or Anadamide
N-ARACHIDONOYL ETHANOLAMINE or ANANDAMIDE
-Discovered by Israeli Researchers in 1992
1993
- Cannabinoid Receptors Discovered in the Immune System
- Cannabinoid 2 Receptors or CB2
- Subsequently Discovered a Second Endocannabinoid, 2-Arachidonoyl Glycerol or 2-AG
HOW MANY ENDOCANNABINOIDS HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED?
Five total, but anandamide and 2-AG are the most important.
CANNABINOID 2 RECEPTORS or CB2
- Located Mainly in Immune Cells such as the Spleen, Tonsils
- Also Found in Skin
- Discovered in 1992
- Evolved 600 Million Years Ago
WHERE ARE CANNABINOID RECEPTORS ALMOST COMPLETELY MISSING?
Cannabinoid Receptors are almost completely missing from the middle area of the human brain where systems critical to keep humans alive, such as heartbeat and breathing, are found, whereas opioids have a profound affect on the midbrain. Hence why cannabis is so safe and does not cause death.
WHY IS CANNABIS SO SAFE?
Because cannabinoid receptors are almost completely missing in the midbrain, where systems critical to keep humans alive, such as heartbeat and breathing, are found.
ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM (ECS)
- Main Function to Regulate Homeostasis
- Works By Sending One Neuron to Another
- Involved with Regulation of Appetite, Pain, Memory, Mood, Movement in the Human Body
- Affects Many Biological Processes Including Appetite and Sleep
- Provides Bridge Between Body and Mind
