End Of Year (year 8) Flashcards
Soldering
Soldering is the process used to join electronic
components together.
Hardwoods
Come from deciduous trees (lose their leaves in
winter). The trees are slow growing taking 150 years
to reach maturity. They have a dense cell structure
and are very strong but difficult to work with.
Examples include oak, ash and beech.
Softwoods
Come from evergreen trees which means that they
have leaves all year around. Softwoods grow faster
than hardwood trees and are not as strong.
Examples include spruce, cedar and pine.
Manufactured boards
They are made in factories by gluing wood layers or
wood fibres together. They are available in lots of
different sizes. Examples include MDF, plywood and
chipboard.
Aesthetics
Pleasing in appearance - the way something looks including colour, shape and texture
Size/dimension
How big or small something is using measurements.
Thermoplastic polymers
Types of plastic that can be reheated and reshaped over and over again making them recyclable
Ergonomics
The study of how humans use objects
Anthropometrics
The measurement of the sie, proportions and range of motion of the human body
Natural fibres
Thread like materials from plants which can be made into fabric
Synthetic fibres
Artificial fibres made from synthetic polymers which come from oil, coal and other petrol based chemicals which can be into fabric
Product analysis
Describing what is good or bad about an existing product to give designers inspiration and a as well as a chance to learn from past mistakes
Design specification
A Iist of conditions that a product should meet
Design brief
A written statement outlining the problem or design challenge including criteria and constraints
Ferrous metals
Metals containing iron, can rust and are magnetic
Non ferrous metals
Metals that do not contain iron, they do not rust and are not magnetic
Smart materials
Materials which change in response to their surroundings, such a light levels or temperature
Papers and boards
Made from trees and can come in various thicknesses none as GSM.
CAD
Computer aided design
CAM
Computer aided manufacturing
Sustainability
Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
What is the job of the HSE (Health &Safety Executive)?
It prevents work-related death, injury and ill health. responsible for identifying, assessing and advising on risks arising from the workplace or work processes, recommending measures to eliminate or minimise and control the risks and implementing the measures.
What are the 3 main joints?
Finger joint
Dovetail joint
Half-flap joint
Define the difference between PAR and Rough Sawn timbers.
Rough sawn timbers still have the sides bare where it’s been sawn and it hadn’t been sanded whereas PAR has been smoothed
Explain how slower growing trees can be a disadvantage the timber industry?
Because there would be a lack of production rate and a slower turn around to get the product sold/made
