End of year exam Flashcards
In a periodic table, where are groups and periods
Groups are down and periods are across
What is an element?
Pure substances that consist of only one type of atom
What is a compound?
A pure substance made of 2 or more elements strongly joined together
What is a mixture?
Two or more substances mixed together but not chemically joined.
If a compound is made of 2 elements, what does its name end with?
ide
If a compound is made of 3 elements and one is oxygen, what does it end with?
ate
How do you find the % of oxygen in air?
Heat copper in air. It will form copper oxide. Measure the original volume of air, and then the final volume. The difference between them is the oxygen content.
Name the gases in air and their percentages
Nitrogen: 78% Oxygen 21% Argon 0.94% Carabon dioxide 0.04%
Name 3 examples of every day alkalis
Milk, washing up liquid, baking soda
Name 3 examples of every day acids
Lemon juice, battery acid, limes
What colour is universal indicator in acid, alkali and neutral
Red to yellow= acid
Green = Neutral
Blue to Purple = alkali
What colour is methyl orange in acid and alkali?
Red in acid, Orange in alkali
What colour is phenolphthalein in acid and alkali?
Colourless in acid, Pink in alkali
What colour is red cabbage in acid and alkali?
Red in acid, green in alkali
What colour is litmus in acid and alkali?
Red in acid, Blue in alkali
What is the PH of a strong and weak acid?
1 and 6
What is the pH of a weak and strong alkali
8 and 14
