Encoding, storage, retrival Flashcards
(9 cards)
What does encoding mean
changing information from one form to another so that it can be stored in the brain
What are the different types of encoding
- Visual - see
- Acoustic - hear
- Semantic - meaning
- Tactile - touch
- Olfactory - smell
What is the process of retrieval
- Encoding - changing info so it can be held in the brain
- Storage - info being held in the brain
- Retrieval - accessing info that has been stored in the brain \ recall
What are the different types of retrieval
- Recognition
- Cued recall
- Free recall
What is the aim of Baddeley’s study of encoding
To see if there is a difference in the type of encoding used in STM and LTM
What is the method of Baddeley’s study of encoding
4 groups were given 12 sets of five words
Group A and B - similar and dissimilar sounding words, recalled immediately
Group B and C - similar and dissimilar meaning words, recalled after 20 minutes
What are the results of Baddeley’s study of encoding
Group A recalled fewer than group B.
Group C recalled fewer than D
Conclusion of Baddeley’s study of encoding
STM is encoded by sound
LTM is encoded by meaning
Weakness of Baddeley’s study of encoding
Point: LTM may not have been studied
Explanation: Group C and D were only given 20 minutes before the recall
Conclusion: The results lack validity
