Encoding and Processing Flashcards
What is Shallow Processing?
Little elaboration with a focus on superficial/perceptual elements.
(i.e., encoding a word by the type of font)
What is Deep Processing?
(think latent learning)
Focusing on the meaning with deeper elabortation
(i.e., encoding words by meaning and connecting it to previous learning)
Types of Encoding
-Visual
-Acoustic
-Semantic (Meaning)
tip: deep processing using semantic encoding
Reggie tried to study for his psych exam the night before it was due.
What method of encoding would he be using
(Spacing Effects)
Massed Practice
trying to encode all at once
Reggie studied every day during the week leading up to his psych exam
What method of encoding is this
(Spacing Effects)
Distributed Practice
encoding over multiple time periods (long-term retention)
What is the testing effect?
Retrieving info for tests helps memory
i.e., review questions
Define recency effect and primacy effect
- The last items are remembered best in the short-term (recency)
- The first items in a list are remembered best in the long-term (primacy)
