Q

EN across period

A

Across a period

Electronegativity increases

  • Increase in nuclear charge
  • Atomic radius decreases
  • Same shielding
so more attraction for the bonding electrons

Q

POLAR molecules

A

If polar bonds arranged symmetrically = the dipoles cancel each other out, then the molecule has no permanent dipole and is non-polar

If the polar bonds are arranged so that they all point roughly in the same direction and the dipoles don’t cancel each other out, then charge across the whole molecule will be uneven so the molecule will have a permanent dipole and is polar
