Emulsions Flashcards
Define an emulsion
is a liquid preparation containing two immiscible liquids, one of which is dispersed as globules (dispersed phase = internal phase) in the other liquid (continuous phase = external phase).
General Types of Pharmaceutical Emulsions
Lotions
Liniments
Creams
Ointments
Vitamin drops
How to determine an emulsion type
By order of addition-slowly add oil into water (o/w emulsion )
By type of emulsifier ( oil soluble or water soluble)
Phase that the emulsifiers is soluble will most probably be continuos phase
Tests for Identification of Emulsion Types
- Dilution Test
- Dye Solubility Test
- Conductivity Test
What dilution test?
Based on the solubility of external phase of emulsion
- o/w emulsion can be diluted with water.
- w/o emulsion can be diluted with oil.
What is conductivity test?
Water is good conductor of electricity whereas oil is non-conductor. Therefore, if the continuous phase is water, the bulb will glow.
What is Dye-Solubility Test?
- Water-soluble dye will dissolve in the aqueous phase.
- Oil-soluble dye will dissolve in the oil phase.
What is emulsifying agents
substances added to an emulsion to prevent the coalescence of the globules of the dispersed phase.
can be given parenterally in form of oil-
in water emulsion.
Oil-soluble
Separation of the internal phase from the external phase is called
BREAKING
Emulsions for parenteral intravenous (IV) administration are
oil/water (o/w) type for easy mixing with the blood.
