Alveoli
The air sacs of the lungs in which the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place
Aorta
The principal artery leaving the left side of the heart and carrying freshly oxygenated blood to the body
Artery
A blood vessel, consisting of three layers of tissue and smooth muscle, that carries blood away from the heart
Brachial Artery
The artery of the arm that branches at the elbow into the radial and ulnar arteries; used to determine the infant’s pulse
Capillaries
The small blood vessels through whose walls various substances pass into and out of the tissues and on to the cells
Carotid Artery
The major arteries that supply blood to the head and brain
Femoral Artery
The principal artery of the thigh. It supplies blood to the lower abdominal wall, external genetalia, and legs. It can be palpated in the groin area
Perfusion
The circulation of oxygenated blood within an organ or tissue in adequate amounts to meet the cells’ current needs
Platelets
TIny, disk-shaped elements that are much similar than cells. They are essential in the initial formation of a blood clot, the mechanism that stops bleeding
Pulse
The wave of pressure created as the heart contracts and forces blood out of the left ventricle and into the major arteries
Quadrant
A section of the abdominal cavity. Imagine a horizontal and a vertical line intersecting at the umbilicus, dividing the abdomen into four equal parts
Radial Artery
The major artery in the forearm. It is palpable at the wrist on the thumb side
Trachea
The windpipe; the main trunk for air passing to and from the lungs
Vein
Any blood vessel that carries blood from the tissues to the heart
Clavicle
The collar bone
