EMT 2 Flashcards
What is involuntary breathing
Governed by the Involuntary nervous system, lung volume and rates of inhalation/exhalation adjust to maintain oxygen levels in the blood.
What is voluntary breathing. (Why did Jo Estill say that singing is an unnatural act.)
During speaking and singing, breathing is regulated by the voluntary nervous system to varying degrees. In the service of a long musical phrase, the singer’s voluntary control of the exhalation overrides the natural biological imperative to inhale.
What are the muscles of inhalation (/ inspiration?)
Diaphragm. External intercostals
What are the muscles of exhalation?
Internal intercostals. Muscles of the abdomen
When are the muscles of inhalation used
Active during inhalation and release to trigger exhalation
When are the muscles of exhalation used
If exhalation is to continue past the point of REL.
They are passive on exhalation to get to REL
What is REL
Resting Expiratory Level. A physiological balance point where pressure within the lungs equals the pressure in the atmosphere
When does a recoil breath occur
When lung volume is low
What are the qualities of a recoil breath
After voluntary exhalation beyond the point of REL.
When exhalatory effort is released, the ribs spring up and the diaphragm drops down, creating an abrupt increase in lung volume with a negative air pressure that draws the air in.
Individual does not need to actively breathe
Breathing attractor states
Belly
Chest
Shoulder
What are the intrinsic muscles of the larynx that regulate TVF length
Thyroarytenoid and Cricothyroid
Where is pitch prepared
In the musculature of the larynx and vocal tract before the tone is made
