EMS Project Flashcards
What real life application does gamma rays have?
Radiotherapy
How is it used.
Gamma rays are used in radiotherapy to treat cancer cells. They can also spot tumour. The Gamma rays are directed at the tumour from many different angles at once and deliver a large amount of radiation in the session at once. They damage the cancerous cell’s dna causing them to die, or reproduce more slowly.
What are the advantages?
The radiation is pointed at a particular part of the body and in most cases does not affect the surrounding parts.
Normal cells may be affected but They usually repair themselves.
What are the disadvantages?
In rare cases the gamma rays can interact with other cells in your body and be the reason for the cell death of normal cells.
Another disadvantage of the use of gamma rays is genetic damage, which could lead to DNA mutations in cells that survive the radiation. This could lead to a second cancer.
