What is ALS?
Advanced Life Support: Has the ability to administer an IV and has even more training in endotracheal intubation, emergency pharmacology, cardiac monitoring, etc. Some of the procedures may of already been started by an EMT
Define AEMT?
Advance Emergency Medical Technician: someone who is trained in specific aspects of ALS (advanced life support), such as administering an IV (intravenous therapy) and administrating certain emergency medications
What is the ADA?
Americans with Disabilities Act: protects individuals with disabilities against discrimination and prevents employers from failing to provide full and equal employment to the disabled
What is an AED?
Automatic External Defibrillator: a handy machine that helps detect life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia (ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia) and delivers an appropriate shock to the patient
What is “certification”?
Process in which a person, institution, or a program is evaluated/recognized for reaching the predetermined standards to ensure safe/ethical caref
What is CQI?
Continuous Quality Improvement: A system of internal/external reviews and audits of all aspects of an EMS system
What is an EMD?
Emergency Medical Dispatch is a system that helps dispatchers in choosing an appropriate unit to respond to a call for assistance. Also providers the caller with important information until arrival of EMS
What is EMR?
Emergency Medical Responder is the first responder to make it to the scene of an emergency to provide initial medical assistance
EMR examples: Police officer, fire-fighter, life-guard, state trooper
What is EMS?
Emergency Medical Services, a multidisciplinary system that represents combined efforts of several professionals and agencies to provide prehospital emergency care to the sick/injured
What is an EMT?
Emergency Medical Technician is an individual who has training in BLS, ability to use an AED, use of a definitive airway adjunct, and helping patients with certain medications
What is HIPAA?
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act was passed in 1996. Main effect on EMS is in limiting availability of patients’ health care information and penalizing violations of patient privacy
What is an IV?
Intravenous Therapy, administering medication directly into the vein
What is licensure?
The process in which a state allows individual(s) to perform a regulated act
What is Medical Control?
Physician instructions given directly by cell or radio (online/direct) or indirectly by protocol/guidelines (off-line/indirect. This is authorized by the MD of the service program
What is National Emergency Medical Service Scope of Practice Mode?
A document created by the NHTSA (Nation Highway Traffic Safety Administration) that outlines skills performed by many EMS providers
