Name some jobs in the leisure industry
Lifeguard, Holiday Rep, Tour guides, Resteraunt employees, Fitness instructor, hotel receptionist etc
What is full time employment?
Contracted to a full hour contract, Employer sets employee a minimum number of hours to work in a week.
What is Part Time employment?
Less hours than a full time employee, (less than 35 hours a week), wont have benefits of being full time such as annual leave and sick leave etc
What is the private sector?
A Business that is not state controlled and is run for the main purpose of making a profit. (Hotels, private health clubs etc)
What is the public sector?
part of the economy providing goods and services that are non profit making. (E.g leisure centres)
What is the voluntary sector?
The voluntary sector or community sector is the duty of social activity undertaken by organizations that are not-for-profit and non-governmental.
What are 0 hour contracts?
Staff given no regular hours, not guaranteed work, given short notice to work when demand is high.
What are term time contracts?
An employee is only employed during teaching works, often had by parents of young children who can look after them in the holidays.
What are twilight shifts?
Staff are hired to cover quiter times such as late at night/evening
What is a job share?
2 people share the duties and resonsiblities of one full time position
Advantages of job share
Less workload per person If someone is ill there is always cover Work hours that suit you Less stress for employees more ideas to bring to the table
Disadvantages of job share
Not great pay
Possible communication issues regarding the work
Hard to find 2 similarly qualified people willing to job share
One person may not pull their weight
paying 2x training costs
What is self employment?
1 person working for themselves in their own business rather than for another employer
Advantages of self employment
Fit work around your lifestyle Be your own boss less cost of commuting organise your own workload make all the decisions yourself
Disadvantages of self employed
Costs of setting up, running the business
Losing money if taking holidays
no secure income
