Industrial relations
The relationship between employer and employees in an organisation
Benefits of good industrial relations
• employee morale and productivity increase - put in greater effort for the business
• staff turnover and absenteeism decrease
• delegating decision making - increase intrapreneurship
Trade dispute
Any dispute between employers and workers
Factors in trade dispute
- Pay claims
- Disputes over working conditions/ hours/ duties
- Redundancies or unfair dismissals
The most common pay claims
-cost of living claim ~ workers request a pay rise when cost of living increases
~comparability claim ~ workers seek comparable pay to workers doing a similar job in a different business
Trade union
An organisation set up to protect the rights and interests of the workers it represents e.g SIPTU, INMO
Trade unions can…
1.inform members of their rights in the workplace
2. Advise and represent union members in a dispute with their employer
3. Negotiate with employers and the government for better pay and conditions.
4. Raise awareness of employees concerns by informing public and the media
Irish congress of trade unions
An umbrella organisation of over 40 trade unions on the island of Ireland representing some 800000 working people
Shop steward
Trade union members in the same workplace can elect a spokesperson who will represent them in dealings with their employer
