What are the duties and rights should employeers provide employees?
- legal reponsibility to provide reasonable care to their saftey and well being
- terms and conditions of employment, contract of employement entitlements
european legislation also helps protect workers
What are the effects of minimum wage
- only 7-8% of the workforce are paid below minimum wage. Those not effected by this have had an increase in minimum wage allowing them to move away from poverty and aspects of the poverty trap
- employment has continued to grow in low-paying sectors following the minimum wage. No great changes have been seen since the 2008 recession
effects of the minimum wage on employers
- companies are more likely to invest in cheaper labour in asia
- small businesses that are labout intesive are most effected by this
- overall wage cost could have been increased due to pressure from larger companies increasing wage
- lower paid sectors who have been most effected have led to closure

what are some things people can discriminate against ?
- age
- gender
- disability
- race
- sexual orientation
What is victimisation ?
treating someone unfairly because they complained about discrimination or harassment
What are trade unions ?
organisations that represent workers in a particular trade, industry or occupation
Why do people join trade unions ?
- representation
- negotiation of pay and conditions
- helps ensure health and saftey
- can use the union for financial, legal benefits
- they support equal opportunity policies
Why are employeers happy to have trade unions ?
- collective barganing assists employers
- ensures agreements are complied with by workers
- takes a longer term view than individuals
What are types of industrial action ?
- an overtime ban
- work-to-rule
- strikes
what is an overtime ban ?
workers work basic hours and refuse to do extra work
What is work to rule?
When workers refuse to do any work outside of their contract and stick verg closely to every rule in the workplace
What is the outside body that is called in to arbitate between employee and employer disputed called ?
ACAS
