Modern Awards (D)
must include the National Employment Standards which provide basic employment conditions for all employees. Modern Awards are set be Fair Work Commission and mostly apply to the lowest paid workers
Enterprise/ Collective Agreement (D)
These agreement are the outcome of enterprise bargaining and are the result of negotiations between an employer and employees/union regarding wages and conditions that are appropriate by Fair Work Commission.
Individual Contract (D)
An individual agreement between an employer and an employee is the individual common law employment contract.
These are often used for short-term or fixed contracts or senior management positions.
Awards (CD)
set out minimum pay and conditions for employees in a particular industry
Enterprise Bargaining (D)
negotiating pay and conditions between employer and employees at the workplace.
*pay increases are often linked to productivity, flexibility and changes in work practises.
Employee Relations
A system that operates to establish relationships between employees and employers to determine wages, conditions of work and dispute resolution.
Decentralised ER
A decentralised system of employee relations is where pay, working conditions and methods of dispute resolution are negotiated between employers and employees in an individual workplace.
Centralised ER
A system whereby pay and working conditions were determined by a central body (Australian Industrial Relations Commission: AIRC) outside of the individual workplace.

- disputes were resolved using conciliation and arbitration.
FWC
the national workplace relations tribunal. It is an independent body with power to carry out a range of functions relating to:
- EB
- termination of employment
- dispute resolution
- industrial action
Conciliation (C)
an independent third party (conciliator) ATTEMPTS to get an agreement between management and workers who are in conflict
Arbitration (C)
an independent third party listen to management and workers who are in conflict, and ENFORCES a resolution on both parties.
Mediation
a dispute settlement process run by an independent third party (a mediator). Mediation hopes to bring disputing parties together to clear up misunderstandings and reach a resolution.
Grievance Procedures
a step by step process which must be followed when a dispute arises. Steps involved may be: speak to relevant parties, lodge a complaint, hold formal meetings, mediation, etc.
