Why is it Imporatant to have employee motivation?
EM=Factors that drive an employee to strive to achieve in the workplace.
EM->more productive as they work harder and take more care, therefore make less mistakes, decreasing cost, increasing quality customer satisfaction,sales, and profit.
They are also less likely to take days off.
Maslow’s motivation theory.
Needs are ranked with the most basic needs situated at the bottom progressing to higher level needs at the top.
Once a particualr need is satissfied, it is no longer a motivator, but the llower-order needs must be satisfied before and individual can move to the next level (sequential movenment through needs).
What are the 5 need categories in the Maslow’s Hierachy of Needs? (in ascending order)
Physiological (basic) needs, Safety needs, social needs, esteem needs, self-actualisation needs.
What are physiological needs?
They are basic requirements for human survival and is fulfilled in the workplace through minimum pay abnd working conditions.
They are not met when: employees lack entry level wages and underemployed staff
Stragegies to implement: Increase hourwss for those who are underemployed
What are afety needs?
Physically safe at work and sense opf job security.
They are not met when: Organisation not abiding by OH&S, employees on long term contracts, threats of redundancies
Strategies to implement: Create job security, ensure employee have safe working conditions, superannuation and insurance.
What are social needs?
Having strong workplace relationships-feeling of bgelonging.
They are not met when: lack of collaborative work, employees not socialising and uncomfortable to contribute ideas and thoughts, lack of sense of ownership.
Strategies to implement: Organise groups of staff to work on projects, organise staff gatherings.
What are self-esteem needs?
Involves employees gaining recognition of performance from others and feeling sense of pride in their own work as a result.
They are not met when: Employee efforts and performance lacks acknowledgement and they lack a msense of accomplishment.
Strategies to implement: Performance pay, recognistion for work at staff meeting, praise, promotion.
What are self actualisation needs?
Achievement of own potential can onlt be fulfilled though inttrinsic motivation.
They are not met when: the tasks isn’t challenging, lack interest, not provided with autonomy.
Strategies to implement: Delegating specific projects to employees, participation in decision making, provide employee with challenging projects
Pros of Maslow’s hierarchy:
Clear squential structure and model
Clear framework to assist in delevoping strategies
Motivations occur quickly
Cons of Maslow’s hierarchy:
Assumes that all employees will work through the same sequential order of needs.
can be difficult to measure if emploees’ needs are met.
Timen consuming for a manager to determine the level of each individual.
