What are the characteristics of empires
Centralised authority: all money flows through capital where all decisions are made; possibly made by Oligarchy (small ruling class with all power)
Large & diverse: big land mass, many social and geographic decisions, more than one ethnic group and region
Militarised: lots of military power compared to rivals
Wealth & commerce: central area for wealth and trade
What powers are there
Regional:
- Can defend themselves and invade neighbouring countries
- Some cultural exchange with neighbours
- Impacts GDP of other countries
Great:
- Cultural influence in other parts world the world
- Can launch invasions in other parts of the world
- Affect economic policy in other parts of the world
Super:
- Global influence all over the world
- Can launch multiple invasions at once
- Can assert economic ideas on other parts of the world
Hyper:
- Hypothetical case
- Can launch invasions anywhere in the world at once
- Everyone follows its economic dictates
What is a hegemony
- Indirect form of imperial dominance where hegemon (leader_ gains power
- Achieved through soft and hard power
- Other countries do what they say
What is hard power vs soft power
Hard: force people to do something they don’t want to do
Soft: persuade people to something you want them to do
What is kinetic power vs non-kinetic power
Kinetic: power involving use of weapons and military force
Non-kinetic:
- Cyber warfare; hacking into databased; shutting down networks
