pathophysiology
A
decreases the surface area of alveoli and weakens small bronchioles which cause air to be trapped.
causes pulmonary hypertension which leads to cor pulmonale

assessment
A
usually hx of cigarette smoking
thin
barrel chest
prolonged expiratory phase
pursed lips
pink due to polycythemia
clubbed fingers
signs of right failure (peripheral edema, etc)

treatment
A
position of comfort for pt
maintain a patent airway and provide ventilatory support
CPAP, BVM, or positive end-pressure ventilation may be necessary
albuterol or ipratropium may be used
