What is the appraisal process?
Primary unconscious automatic processes in the amygdala and secondary appraisal = more complex processes that differentiate emotions
Do positive or negative stimuli provoke more response?
Negative stimuli trigger more rapid and stronger physiological responses
What is the amygdala’s main function?
To decide if something is good or bad, or a danger and tends to let the bad through rather than the good
Why do we swear?
Produces arousal, making you more aggressive and ready for fight or flight = decrease of pain
What does language do to emotional experiences?
Gives insight and clarity to the nature of our emotions and more rational in a second language
What is the function of an infant’s smile?
Make adults interested and happy and therefore more likely to look after them
Describe the perceptions of emotions in children of different ages
5 months – discriminate affective messages indicating approval or prohibition
5-9 months – react to facial expressions
>9 months – caretaker face to gather info about environment
Pre-school – differentiate happy, angry, sad and scared, surprised and disgust (that order)
School age – Good at recognising emotions in other people
