emotions and motivation Flashcards
motivation
a need or desire that energizes behavior and directs it towards a goal
evolutionary theory
instincts are complex behaviors that have fixed action patterns throughout species and unlearned
drive reduction theory
homeostasis- balance
incentive theory
where our needs (drives) push, incentives (positive or negative stimuli) pulls us in reducing our drive
hierarchy of needs
reaching self actualization is meeting our full potential in life
physiology of hunger
stomach contractions sends signals to the brain making us aware of our hunger
glucose
glucose level in the blood is maintained. insulin decreases glucose in blood making us feel hungry
hypothalamic centers
lateral hypothalamus brings on hunger,
emotions
emotions are our bodies adaptive response
james-lange theory
physiological activity precedes the emotional experience (we react to the changes we feel in our bodies)
cannon-bard theory
emotion-triggering stimulus and bodys arousal take place simultaneously
primary motivators
things you need for basic survival like food water sleep etc
secondary motivators
physiological needs and desired that are not essential for survival
