Q

What % of High and Low Performers have EQ?

A
  1. 90% of higher performers are also high in EQ
  2. Only 20% of low performers are high in EQ.
  3. You can be a high performer without EQ, but the chances are slim.
  4. The link between EQ and earnings is so strong that every point increase in EQ add $1,300 to an annual salary.
17
Q

What % of people who are high in self-awareness are top performers? Why is this the case?

A
  • It’s so important for job performance, 83% of people high in self-awareness are top performers, and just 2% of bottom performers are high in self-awareness
  • Why is this the case? When you are self-aware you are far more likely to pursue the right opportunities, put your strengths to work, and perhaps most importantly, keep your emotions from holding you back.
18
Q

When you have self-awareness are you afraid of emotional mistakes?

A

No, having self-awareness means you aren’t afraid of emotional “mistakes”. They tell you what you should be doing differently and provide a steady stream of information you need to understand as your life unfolds.

19
Q

What is the biggest challenge with Self-Management?

A
  • The biggest challenge is not resisting the explosive or problematic behaviors, it is managing your tendencies over time and applying your skills in a variety of situations.
  • Real results come from putting your momentary needs on hold to pursue larger, more important goals b/c the realization of such goals is often delayed, meaning your commitment to self-management will be tested over and over again.
20
Q

What does Social Awareness require?

A

It requires us to listen and observe well, stop talking, stop anticipating, and really watch people as you interact with them. You have to do this in the heat of the moment while things are happening.

21
Q

What is Relationship Management?

A
  • Relationship management is your ability to use your awareness of your own emotions and those of others to manage interactions successfully. This ensures clear communication and effective handling of conflict.
  • Relationship management is also the bond you build with others over time.
22
Q

What is the difference between an interaction and a relationship?

A

The difference between an interaction and a relationship is a matter of frequency. It’s the product of the quality, depth, and time you spend interacting with another person.

23
Q

What is the greatest challenge to Relationship Management?

A
  • Stress - more than 70% of people tested have difficulty handling stress.
  • Conflicts at work/home tend to fester or explode as people avoid them b/c they lack the skills needed to initiate a direct, yet constructive conversation.
24
Q

What are the Five Core Emotions?

A
  • Happiness
  • Sadness
  • Anger
  • Fear
  • Shame

Q

Car Analogy (Intelligence and Emotional Intelligence)

A

Intelligence is your raw horsepower. It’s how quickly you can move but it doesn’t determine how fast you get to your destination.

On the highway of life, you can drive as fast as you want but if you don’t know where you’re going, how to avoid the traffic jams and accidents, having more horsepower (higher IQ) is pointless.

Having more horsepower is actually more risky, because you’re over confident

Emotional Intelligence is your GPS. It allows you to determine the best route on the highway of life. It pings you, alert - cops ahead. alert, traffic jam ahead. alert - negative people ahead. alert, situation I know I don’t manage well ahead.

26
Q

Why are our brains hard-wired to give emotions the upper hand?

A
  1. Electric signals: Everything we see, smell, hear, taste, and touch travels through our body in the form of electrical signals
  2. Cell to Cell: These signals pass from cell to cell until they reach their ultimate destination, the brain
  3. Spine - Limbic - Frontal Lobe: Enter our brain at the base near the spinal cord and need to get to the frontal lobe (behind your forehead and the place where rational, logical thinking takes place). The trouble is, they need to pass through your limbic system (where emotions are produced) along the way.
  4. Experience Journey: This journey ensures you experience things emotionally before your reason can kick into gear
27
Q

What is the physical source of emotional intelligence?

A

Communication between emotional and rational “brains” (limbic and frontal lobe) is the physical source of emotional intelligence
