Define stress, stressors, and coping
- Stress is the RESPONSE to perceived threats or challenges resulting from stimuli or events that cause strain
- Stressors can CAUSE internal or external event or stimulus that induces stress
- coping process of DEALING WITH internal or external demands are perceived to be threatening or overwhelming
Outline the general adaptation syndrome (GAS)
describe the process your body goes through when you are exposed to any kind of stress, positive, or negative
- alarm leads to the activity of the sympathetic nervous system
- resistance “adaptation” or overcome
- exhaustion long-term stress has a negative impact on health, lowers resistance to disease and healing
Explain how stressors relate to health problems
affect your body, thoughts, feelings, and behavior
- high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes
