emotion Flashcards
What is emotion?
Subjective experiences that are comprised of the same three components: physiological responses, subjective feelings and expressive behaviour. It fuels behaviour and determines how we learn and remember.
Emotions can be triggered by…
… both internal (thoughts and needs) and external factors (events observed)
Physiological responses are…
…changes in our bodies when we experience an emotion.
What is responsible for triggering the fight or flight response?
The autonomic nervous system.
Subjective feelings are…
… the inner, personal experience of an emotion. The way in which an event or experience is interpreted can influence subjective feelings associated with an emotional response.
Expressive behaviour is…
… the outward observable behaviours which communicate emotion. This includes facial expressions, body language and vocal qualities, and can be either intentional or unintentional.
What is the role of the limbic system?
Emotional processing.
What does the limbic system consist of?
A network of regions that work together to process and make sense of the world. It comprises the hypothalamus, hippocampus, thalamus and amygdala.
Describe the role of the hypothalamus.
It is the main link between the nervous and endocrine system; it keeps the body in a state of homeostasis.
Describe the role of the hippocampus.
It is associated with learning and memory.
Describe the role of the thalamus.
It relays motor and sensory signals to the cerebral cortex.
Describe the role of the amygdala.
It is the primary processor of emotions.
How does culture influence emotional expression?
Established social norms or ‘rules’ of different social constructs can impact how certain emotions are expressed and its appropriateness for different situations.
What is emotional regulation?
The ability to exert control over one’s own emotional state.
What does Plutchik’s Theory suggest?
There are 8 primary emotions, and each of which are innate. They are all directly related to some pattern of adaptive behaviour which enhances our survival.
