What is Durkheim known for his theories on?
Functionalism and The Division of Labour.
Durkheim viewed society as a what?
An organism - where each component plays a necessary role. It cannot function by itself.
What does ‘Collective Consciousness’ mean? What does it create?
A set of ideas, beliefs or attitudes that a society shares. Durkheim argues that this creates a sense of belong.

What is ‘Mechanical Solidarity’?
When society is unified by beliefs, lifestyles and occupations.
Why does Durkheim call it ‘Mechanical Solidarity’?
Because he uses the analogy of a machine. If one part of the machine breaks, it can be replaced with the same part of another machine.
What is ‘Organic Solidarity’?
The social cohesion based on how dependent we are on each other within society as, in opposition to ‘MS’, we are all different and have different skills.
What is ‘Egoistic Suicide’?
A lack of social and familial bonds. Making someone feel detached from their community.
What is ‘Altruistic Suicide’?
Where individuals are highly integrated into a group and therefore lose their solidarity.
What does ‘Altruistic Suicide’ lead to?
Individuals sacrificing themselves for the group’s interests.
What is ‘Anomic Suicide’?
Due to low regulation in society. This is often seen during times of stress or change.
What is ‘Fatalistic Suicide’?
Due to high regulation. With people living under extreme rules and expectations.
What is ‘Totenism’?
System of belief in which humans are said to have kinship or a mystical relationship with a spirit-being, such as an animal or plant.
What is the ‘Division of Labour’?
The separation of a work process into a number of tasks, with each task performed by a separate person or group of persons. Creating a machine.
