Emergency Procesdures Flashcards
What’s the difference between EMERGENCY TRAFFIC and MAYDAY?
Mayday is for firefighter emergencies only
Emergency traffic is for all other emergencies on the fire ground
The term ________________
Is designed to announce any problem incident commanders needs to be aware of. These are safety situations and should be identified and understood globally.
EMERGENCY TRAFFIC
What 3 things does command say when EMERGENCY TRAFFIC is said on the radio?
- Acknowledge EMERGENCY TRAFFIC
- Repeat the safety hazard
- Announce any operational changes
Note: all other traffic should stop during EMERGENCY TRAFFIC
After a MAYDAY is called, what 3 things does command immediately do?
- Acknowledge MAYDAY and gather NUCAN
- initiate rescue operations
- Announce the emergency procedure to all on foreground.
When a mayday is called there are things that need to be found out immediately. They are referred to as NUCAN. What is NUCAN?
- Name
- Unit and location
- Conditions
- Actions
- Needs
After IC hears the NUCAN report, what 2 things does he do next?
- Tell fire dispatch a mayday has been called
2. Order additional alarms/tac channels.
If IC keeps the tac channel for all ops after a mayday is called, what kind of discipline is required from all those on the fire ground?
Strict radio discipline.
What’s the trigger point after a mayday is called to move operations to a separate radio channel?
If the rescue is going to be an extensive operation.
Once the decision to change tac channels occurs after a mayday is called, command will voice the change on the original tac channel and then do what on the new tac channel.
Conduct a PAR.
If a mayday is called, what’s the minimum staffing in staging you want?
A full alarm in staging.
Once you reach a down FF in a mayday search, you complete a PAC, CAN. What’s in the PAC?
P- person, pass device silence, portable radio of Ff silenced.
A- air (how much the FF has) assessment of injuries, actions: air options, packaging type and location of exit points.
C- communicate a CAN report based on the PAC assessment.
What’s the CAN report?
Conditions (what you’ve got)
Actions (what you’re doing)
Needs (what resources you need)
Once the down FF is removed from the IDLH, what does command say to everyone on the radios?
“All clear on the RIC, resume radio traffic.”
When an emergency evacuation occurs on the fire ground, what is the horn blast sequence?
No more than 10 seconds of shorn blasts from the horn followed by 10 seconds of silence. Repeated 3 times. Should last for 50 seconds.
Who designated what apparatus to sound the emergency evacuation horns?
Command does
Where should the unit be in relation to the command post who is assigned to do the EMERGENCY EVACUATION signal?
Away from the Command Post, so it doesn’t interfere with communications.
When an Emergency Evacuation is ordered and completed, company officers will account for their personnel and command will do what?
Request a PAR from the entire incident.
What does command say to end an Emergency Evacuation or Emergency Traffic event?
“All clear, resume radio traffic”
When do most mayday events occur?
In the first 7-10 minutes of the first arriving fire unit.
When only 1 BC is on scene during a Mayday, he runs it. If there are 2 BCs on scene, which runs it?
The BC that took the initial radio traffic call for mayday.
