Q

Loss of TR thrust in forward flight

A

A nose-right yaw uncorrectable with left pedal

  1. Immediately enter autorotation
  2. Maintain at least 70 KIAS if practical
  3. Select LZ and roll into detent and perform autorotation

Vertical stabilizer may permit flight above 70 KIAS to suitable LZ; prior to reducing airspeed enter autorotation

Q

Engine fire during start-up on ground

A
  1. Continue to crank attempting to suck flames and excess fuel through carburetor into engine
  2. If engine starts, run at 50-60% (R44-60-70%) for short time
  3. Mixture Off
  4. Fuel valve Off
  5. Battery Off
  6. If time permits, apply rotor brake
  7. Exit helicopter

Q

Fire in flight

A
  1. Enter auto
  2. Cabin Heat Off (time permitting)
  3. Cabin Vent - On (time permitting)
  4. Engine is running = perform normal landing then mixture and fuel valve off
Engine off = fuel valve OFF and full down auto
  5. Battery OFF
  6. If time permits, apply rotor brake
  7. Exit helicopter

Q

Electrical fire in flight

A
  1. Master & ALT OFF
  2. Open cabin vents
  3. Land Immediately
  4. Mixture & Fuel valve OFF
  5. If time permits, apply rotor brake
  6. Exit helicopter

*** Master & ALT off = no horn, light & governor

Q

Drive system failure indications

A

May be indicated by an unusual noise or vibration, nose right or left yaw, or decreasing rotor RPM while engine RPM is increasing.

Q

Ditching - power off

A
  1. Same procedures for over land until contacting water. If time permits, unlatch doors prior to water contact.
  2. Apply lateral cyclic when contacts water to stop blades rotating
  3. Release seatbelt and quickly clear aircraft when blades stop rotating

Q

Ditching - power on

A
  1. Descend to hover above water
  2. Unlatch doors
  3. Passenger exits
  4. Fly safe distance away from passenger
  5. Switch off Master & ALT
  6. Hover auto into water (can slow RPM)
  7. Apply left cyclic to stop blades
  8. Release seat belt and quickly clear aircraft when blades stop rotating

10
Q

Power failure above 500’

A

Enter auto
Select LZ and maneuver to land into wind (if altitude permits)
Restart if time permits; if unable turn off unnecessary switches and fuel
40’ flare
8’ level off
Raise collective just before touchdown to cushion landing
Touchdown in level attitude with nose straight ahead
At night, turn on landing light below 1,000’ to preserve battery

Q

Right Roll in Low G condition

A

Gradual aft cyclic to restore positive G and main rotor thrust.
After G and MR thrust restored apply lateral cyclic for roll.

13
Q

Uncommanded pitch, roll or yaw from flight in turbulence

A

Gradually apply controls to maintain rotor RPM, positive G and to eliminate sideslip.
Minimize cyclic control inputs, do not over control.

Q

Action for hydraulic system failure

A
  1. Verify HYD switch on
  2. If not restored, HYD switch off
  3. Adjust airspeed and flight for comfortable flight
  4. Land as soon as practical

If HYD switch is OFF, try pulling HYD circuit breaker to restore

Q

Land as soon as practical

A

Landing site is at pilot’s discretion based on nature of problem and available landing areas. Flight beyond nearest airport is not recommended.
