Emergency Procedures Flashcards
Disconnecting the battery starts the drain time on all vehicles?
False. Starts the drain time for electronically activated devices, not mechanically activated.
CR:SB#79-Mechanically activated cannot be deactivated in the field.(1990 Jaguar)
What is the rule of 5-10-20 with airbags?
5” from side airbags, 10” from driver airbags and 20” from passenger airbags.
Automatic Roll Over Protection Systems
Disconnecting the battery and avoiding its deployment path are steps to follow.
In some newer vehicles these systems can be manually deployed-when this is the case, manually deploying it would be a course of action.
Disentanglement
Removal of wreckage from around the victim.
Extrication
Physical removal of the victim from the vehicle.
Where should the Hurst Tool power unit be placed?
In the front or rear of the vehicle.
Engine Ops @ Extrication
- Officer should divide co into 2 teams.
- Officer and 2 CFR trained members(with trauma bag and collar) proceed to accident. Remaining members stretch and charge precautionary handline.
- When fire or hazardous condition exists on arrival, stretching and charging hose line is paramount. Consider a foam handline.
Ladder Ops @ Extrication
- Officer and Inside Team proceed to accident. Perimeter survey, chock vehicle, gain access to victim.
- Before shutting ignition: car in park, windows opened, seats moved back, seatbelt removed.
- If engine or EMS not on scene, stabilize patient.
- Roof and OV bring Hurst Tool.
- LCC initially uses rig to block traffic. Then can be used for additional equipment.
- Officer should ensure disconnection of battery. Negative terminal first.
Vehicle Stabilization
- Placing step chocks, shutting down engine, engaging parking brake, transmission in park, and disconnecting battery are all part of stabilization.
- Vehicles are stabilized as they are found.
- NEVER right a vehicle with a victim inside.
- Before stabilizing, check under vehicle for any victims.
- Chock just behind front wheels and in front of rear wheels. Step side down.
How many cuts are made when creating a 3rd door?
4
- Top of B post
- Bottom of B post
- Vertical cut rear of quarter panel
- Horizontal cut rear quarter panel at rocker panel.
Removing windshield
- Sawzall with wood cutting blade.
- Axe (considered as a last resort)
- Windshield Saw - make sure blade is installed correctly (teeth facing handle of tool)
Dashboard Displacement
- Make sure vehicle is properly stabilized with a chock under the rocker panel where the cuts are made.
- 2 cuts in bottom portion of the A Post. Lower cut made below the hinge, parallel to rocker panel. Second cut made approx 6-8” above first cut.
- 3rd cut low on upper portion of A post
- Relief cut (4th cut) may assist dashboard displacement. Made in front fender. Avoid cutting through shock assemblies.
What can be used to protect victim during Glass Removal @ extrication?
Salvage plastic or yellow exposure blankets are good choices. Fabric blankets are not a good choice.
What is the preferred method of door removal when vehicle is on its roof?
Attacking the hinge side.
Area of Safety when using the jaws?
Area of safety measuring the fully opened length and width of the jaws. Do not place any part of the body within this zone.
