Emergency Procedures Flashcards
Engine failure on take off roll
Engine idle Brake hard Flaps up Mixture idle cut off Ignition off Master off
Engine failure after take off
Airspeed 60 kts Mixture idle cut off Fuel off Ignition off Flaps Master off
Engine failure in flight - cause check
Airspeed 60 Carb heat on Primer in and locked Fuel on Mixture rich Ignition both/start
Emergency landing without power
Airspeed 60 Mixture idle cut off Fuel off Ignition off Flaps Master off Doors unlatch Touchdown tail low Brake hard
Precautionary
Airspeed 60 Flaps 20 Field - Length Obstacles Wind Surface Radio and electrical off Flaps 30 Airspeed 55 Master off Doors unlatch Touchdown tail low Ignition off Brake heavily
Ditching
Radio: Mayday 121.5, squawk 7700 Heavy objects secure or jettison Approach: High winds heavy seas - into wind Light winds heavy swells - parallel to swells Flaps 30 Power - 300fpm descent 55kts Doors unlatch Touchdown - level attitude Face - cushion Evacuate Inflate life vests and raft
Fire at start
Continue cranking If it starts, power 1700 rpm for few minutes Shut down and inspect If doesn’t start, keep cranking Get fire extinguisher Secure engine Master off Ignition off Fuel off Extinguish fire Inspect damage
Fire in flight
Mixture cutoff Fuel off Master off Cabin heat and air off 85 kts Forced landing
Electric fire in flight
Master off All other switches off except ignition Vents/cabin air/heat closed Fire extinguisher If fire out and need electricity, master on Check circuit breakers Electrical switches one at a time Vents open
Cabin fire
Master off
Vents/cabin air/heat closed
Extinguish fire. Then ventilate
Land ASAP
Wing fire
Nav lights off Strobe lights off Pitot heat off Side slip away from fire Land ASAP Keep flaps retracted
Icing
Pitot heat 180 turn or change altitude Cabin heat full Increase power Carb heat Land ASAP Higher stall speed Flaps - keep retracted Scrape windshield for landing Forward slip for better vis App 65-75 kts Land level attitude
Flat tire
Land on good tire first. Hold off as long as possible on flat.
Excessive charge on ammeter - full deflection
Alternator off
Pull alternator circuit breaker
Non-essential electrical equipment off
Land as soon as practicable
Ammeter discharge - low-voltage light on
Radios off Alternator circuit breaker - check in Master off Master on Check low-voltage light off Radios on If light still on, alternator off Radios and non-essential equipment off Land as soon as practicable
Landing without elevator
Airspeed 55 kts
Flaps 20
Once trim is set, use only power for glide
On flair, trim full nose up, because nose will drop when power reduced
Vacuum system failure:
180 degree turn in clouds
Note heading indicator direction
Time 60 seconds
Standard rate left turn
Double check with compass after rollout
Adjust with skidding rather than rolling for heading accuracy
Cautious application of elevator. Steer with rudder, not control wheel as much as possible
Vacuum system failure:
Emergency descent in clouds
Obtain approval Choose east or west direction - minimizes compass swing Keep hands off control wheel - steer with rudder Monitor turn coordinator and compass Stabilize let down: Mixture rich Carb heat Reduce power for 500-800 fpm descent Trim for 70 kts
Recovery from spiral dive
Throttle idle Level wings watching tc Cautiously reduce speed to 70 kts Carb heat Engine warms Resume cruise after descending through clouds
