Emergency Procedures Flashcards
What is decompression
A decrease in cabin pressure and an increase in cabin altitude.
The cabin altitude would rise to the altitude at which the aircraft is actually flying
Can be slow or rapid depending on cause
What is rapid decompression?
If there is a leak or failure of a window the aircraft will leave the aircraft in a rush and accompanied by an explosive discharge
What are the signs of Rapid decompression?
A loud explosive noise
Appearance of drop down oxygen masks
Pains in ears and sinuses
Mist forming in the cabin
Mist may cause the toilets smoke detector to activate
Sudden drop in cabin temperature
Effects of decompression?
Lack of oxygen occurs when altitude reached 15000ft - hypoxia can set in
What is the time of useful conciousness?
Is a period of time from a persons reduction in oxygen and no longer capable of tasks
15 - 30 seconds at 35000 ft and 7 -10 seconds at 40000ft
What are the cabin indications of decompression?
9550 ft - lights and signs
Exit signs will come on
The cabin lighting comes on 100%
Fasten seatbelts and no smoking signs will come on
14000ft -
Oxygens masks will drop down
PA volume increases
Emergency recorded announcement will be broadcast
What is slow decompression?
Gradual loss or cabin pressure. Will take more than 10 seconds to equalise. Maybe from small cracks in the window or fuselage
What are the effects of slow decompression?
Pain in the ears
Dizziness
Increased tiredness
What actions are to be taken in slow decompression?
Any abnormality such as crack in the window or door seals broken need reporting.
Move PAX away from area if possible
What actions are to be taken in rapid decompression?
Crew will hear “attention crew, emergency descent:
CC to go on 100% oxygen immediately
Sit down and fasten seat belt or sit where possible
Ensure any trolleys wedged between seats and brakes on
What will you do if the Cdr doesn’t make the emergency PA?
CC nearest to the FCC must as soon as practicable and safe to do so, don portable oxygen and proceed to the FCC
Advise the Cpt of the situation and make sure they have their masks on
Use emergency code only
Once the PA is made, what are the actions of the CC?
The PA is played, if not then the PA is to be read out from the EPB
Indicate through hand signals to the PAX to put their mask on.
CC should not move through the cabin or take their mask off
When will you know the descent is complete and safe altitude reached?
You will hear “purser to the flight deck”
CC should then if not already on portable oxygen grab one and a MRT to check all PAX have an oxygen supply
What are the CC actions in a decompression once Purser to the flight deck command is heard?
Check and fit masks
Ensure PAX strapped in
Take MRT and PO sets to unconscious PAX
Administer I/C
Secure the cabin and switch electrics off
Check toilets
Keep PAX away from door
What should you do if there is a fire?
Immediate action should be taken to extinguish it
- Identify the type, source and location
- Collect the appropriate equipment
- fighting the fire
- contact the Cdr via interphone
What are classed as fire sources?
Electrical
Matches
Cigarettes
Combustible materials ie waste
What are the 3 responders and their responsibilities?
Firefighter- locate the fire and the source, obtain BCF and fight the fire, alert other CC
Communicator - inform the FCC of
- location, source and severity
- number of extinguishers used
- time the firefighting began
- maintain communications to give situation of the cabin
Assistant Firefighter- support
- collect extra firefighting equipment
- support and coordinate the Firefighting effort
- remove flammable material from the area
- be prepared to take over
What are your actions for an oven fire?
Isolated the electrics turning them off
Keep the oven door closed
Don PBE and get the BCF
Open the door enough to insert the BCF nozzle
Discharge a small amount
Close the door and monitor
Report if necessary
What do you do with a cold lav door?
Put back of the hand over the door If cold-
Collect firefighting equipment
Summon assistance
Test squirt BCF
Crouch down low behind the door
Open the door a few centimetres
Locate and attack the source
Check surrounding areas for fire
Monitor the area and keeps paxs away
What to do with a hot lav door?
Indicates fire is severe
- collect all firefighting equipment
- summon for assistance and back up equipment
- test squirt BCF
- crouch down low
- assistant fire fighter has BCF at the top- as could allow smoke, heat and flames to be released
- open the door a few centimetres
- discharge the BCF at the bottom to start and the tip if required
- close and leave for 30seconds
- if no flames, entry keeping low and locate the source.
- discharge BCF at the source
- monitor the areas and keep PAX away
What are the actions with a lithium battery fire?
Where possible unplug the device and switch off
Collect firefighting equipment
Discharge the BCF to suppress flames to cool it down
Pour water onto battery
Get the LIBK and put the battery inside
