What is the patient preperation for field radiography?
Patient is in pain and anxious - Often unable to weight bare and limb is shaking - bad image
Restraint
* Analgesia – NSAIDs & opiates
* Sedation – alpha 2 agonist (xylazine, detomidine, romifadine), opiates (butorphanol) & acepromazine (anxiolytic)
* Remove bandages
* Tail bandage
what is the ideal place for equine field radiography?
- Sufficient space
- Flat firm floor
- Out of direct sunlight
- Enclosed
- Private
- Electricity supply
May not be easy to move the horse
what equiment is needed for equine field radiography?
Saftey equipment:
* 3 lead gowns
* 3 thyroid protectors
* lead gloves
* ‘Local Rules’ document (SOPs)
* dosimeter badge
* radiation warning signs
Imange production equipment:
* X-ray generator, laptop & plate(s)
* extension lead
* foot blocks
* plate holder
* generator stand
* ‘L’ & ‘R’ markers
* exposure chart
how do you radiograph splint bones?
oblique views:
Dorsolateral palmeromedial and dorsomedial palmerolateral views
How do you radiograph third carple bone slab fractures, a common injury of race horses
two veiws:
flexed lateral view of the carpus and Dorsalproximal (35) dorsodistal oblique
what are the complications of fracture repair, espcially intermal fracture repair?
- Osteomyelitis (infection around screw)
- Screw loosening (needs replacing with larger screw)
- Implant failure
- Delayed / non union
- Ring sequestrum (thermal injuring form drilling, screw losening and infection)
- Support limb laminitis (as spending all time on this leg
How is a pedal bone radiograph taken?
plate under hoof, beam from the dorasl side of the leg - 65 degree angle
