Emergency drugs Flashcards
What class of drug is Phenylephrine?
synthetic non-catecholamine
What is the mechanism of action of phenylephrine?
Alpha 1 adrenergic receptor stimulant, mostly direct acting.
What is a normal dose of phenylephrine.
50-200 mcg.
Should phenylephrine or ephedrine be used during OB cases?
Ephedrine.
What class of drug is Ephedrine?
synthetic non-catecholamine.
What is the mechanism of action of ephedrine?
Indirectly stimulates beta and alpha adrenergic receptors.
What is normal dose for ephedrine?
5-25mg.
What class of drug is atropine?
Anticholinergic- antagonizes effect of Ach at cholinergic post ganglionic muscarinic receptors.
Where are muscarinic receptors found?
Heart, salivary glands, smooth muscles of GU and GI tract.
What is the normal dose of atropine?
15-75 mcg/kg or .4-1 mg
What drug is similar to atropine but does not cross the BBB?
Glycopyrrolate (Robinul)
What is the mechanism of action of succinycholine?
Depolarizing muscle relaxant- attaches to nicotinic cholinergic receptor. Sustained depolarization of the post-junctional membrane.
What is the mechanism of action of labetalol?
Non-selective beta blocker as well as alpha blocker.
What group should you avoid giving labetalol to?
Asthmatics.
What is the mechanism of action of esmolol?
Beta 1 selective at small doses.
