Embryology of the brain Flashcards
When does the CNS appear and what does it appear as?
Also state the location.
CNS appears in 3rd week as slipper-shaped plate of ectoderm thickening = Neural Plate, located in front of primitive pit.
How is the neural tube formed?
Lateral edges are elevated to
form neural folds, which finally
fuse = Neural Tube.
Where does the fusion begin and proceed?
Fusion begins in the cervical region
& proceeds in cephalic and
caudal directions.
List the 3 dilations[brain vesicles].
(i) Prosencephalon (Forebrain)
(ii) Mesencephalon (Midbrain)
(iii) Rhombencephalon (Hindbrain)
Prosencephalon (Forebrain) →
Telencephalon : Lateral ventricle
Diencephalon : 3rd Ventricle
Rhombencephalon (Hindbrain)→
Metencephalon : Upper part of 4th
ventricle
Mylencephalon : Lower part of 4th
Ventricle
Cervical flexure :
At the junction of the hindbrain & spinal
cord
Cephalic Flexure:
In midbrain region
The prosencephalon consists of 2 parts :
Telencephalon and diencephalon
TELENCEPHALON :
formed by midpoint & 2
lateral outpocketings: cerebral
hemispheres
DIENCEPHALON :
characterized by outgrowth:
optic vesicles
Mesencephalon :
forms the
Midbrain
Rhombencephalon
Consists of 2 parts:
- Metencephalon
* Myelencephalon
Metencephalon:
Pons &
Cerebellum
Myelencephalon:
Medulla
oblongata & Spinal Cord
