Embryology Flashcards
What is patent ductus arteriosus?
Persistent communication between the descending aorta and pulmonary artery due to failure of physiological closure
When does the cardiovascular system begin to develop?
During gastrulation (week 3)
What is the function of the ductus venosus?
To by pass blood flow to the liver, instead transporting blood from the placenta to the inferior vena cava
What is the function of the foreman ovale?
To transport blood directly from them right atrium to the left atrium, avoiding the lungs
What is the function of ductus arteriosus?
To by pass the lungs, by allowing blood to flow from the pulmonary trunk directly to the aorta
Describe the changes to the circulatory system that occur at birth
- Respiration begins, so left atrium increases and foramen ovalis closes
- Ductus arteriosus contracts and undergoes a physiological change, closing it
- Placental support is removed, so ductus venosus closes
