Embryology Flashcards

1
Q

How many pharyngeal arches are there and how are they named?

Which is the first to develop?

A

Five
Numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 6

Q

What does each pharyngeal arch consist of?

A

Four things

  • Central core of mesenchyme -> musculature of face and neck
  • Neural crest cells -> skeletal components of face
  • Cranial nerve component
  • Artery (aortic arch)

Q

Do all five of the pharyngeal arches exist together?

A

No, you don’t ever have all five at the same time - as the later ones develop the first few will have regressed

Q

What are the pharyngeal pouches separated by
- Externally
- Internally
What type of lining does each have?

A

Externally separated by deep pharyngeal clefts
- Ectoderm lining

Internally separated by pharyngeal pouches
- Endoderm lining

Q

Which cranial nerves are associated with which pharyngeal arches?

A

Arch 1 – CN V (trigeminal)
Arch 2 – CN XII (facial)
Arch 3 – CN IX (glossopharyngeal)

Q

Pharyngeal arch 1

- Which skeletal components does this form?

A

First arch is special - it divides itself into two:
- Maxillary process: maxilla, zygomatic bone and part of temporal bone
- Mandibular process: incusm malleus and mandible
Mandibular process is also associated with Meckel’s cartilage - mandible is layed down alongside it

Q

What is an otic placode?

A

A thickening of the ectoderm - folds in on itself to form a vesicle (Otic vesicle) which gives rise to the inner ear

17
Q

What are the names of the straight and dilated ends of the semicircular canals and how many are there of each?

A

Dilated end = Crus Ampullare (3)

Non-dilated end = Crus Nonampullare (2)
