EM spectrum Flashcards
Uses of waves
RW-radio MW-phones IR- night vision VL-seeing UV-uv tanning lamps XR-for seeing bones GR-radiotherapy
Order of waves
Radio waves Microwaves Infrared IR VISIBLE LIGHT Ultraviolet X rays Gamma rays
All waves in the em spectrum have the following four properties
All
transfer energy
Transverse waves
Can be diffracted reflected and refracted
All travel at the speed of light in a vacuum
Telephones and fax machines and computers etc all have to transmit info in the form of electrical pulses. These pulses can carry info in 2 ways. Name the two ways
Analogue signal
Digital signal
How do digital signals work
Converted into binary sent down the telephone lines as a series of electric pulses
How do analogue signals work
Information is converted into electrical voltages. These electrical signals are then amplified
Advantages of using digital signals
Digital signals regenerate a cleaner more accurate copy of the original sound
Digital signals are also easier to design and build than analogue
Their data is also easier to process
Disadvantages of analogue signals
Disadvantages of analogue signals
When analogue signals are amplified any accompanying noise is also amplified, this can eventually siren out original sound
