EM SA1 Flashcards
What does atmosphere mean?
The atmosphere, a mix of gases surrounding Earth, makes life possible by providing breathable air, shielding us from harmful UV radiation, and trapping heat to warm the planet.
What are the different layers of the atmosphere(from lowest to highest)?
-Troposphere
-Stratosphere
-Mesosphere
-Thermosphere
-Exosphere
What are the major components of air in the atmosphere?
-Nitrogen 78%
-Oxygen 21%
-Other gases 1%
What is atmospheric pollution?
Atmospheric or air pollution is the presence of harmful gases/substances in the air, which can harm humans and the environment.
What factors contribute to air pollution?
Emissions from factories, vehicle exhaust, natural sources like wildfires and volcanic eruptions, etc.
What does ‘smog’ mean?
Smog is a combination of smoke and fog that lowers visibility and gives poor air quality.
How is smog created?
Smog is the result of the reaction of emissions from cars, factories, and industries with the sunlight and atmosphere.
Why is smog harmful to health?
When smog is inhaled, it may cause the following effects:
-Coughing
-Burning sensation in eyes and throat
-Risk of serious heart diseases
-Risk of serious lung diseases
-Dangerous for people with asthma
What is human population?
Human population is the number of people in a specific area.
What is the estimated population of the world as of 2024?
8.2 billion people
What is population distribution?
Population distribution is the way people are distributed on the surface of the earth.
What is population density and how is it calculated?
Population density is the ratio between the number of people to the area of the land. It is measured in person per square kilometer using this formula:
Density=Total Population/Total Land area
What are the factors influencing the distribution of population?
*Geographical factors
-Water availability
-soil
-Climate
*Economic factors
-Industrialization
-Urbanization
-Minerals
What regions of the earth are the most thinly populated?
The North and South poles.
What is the coldest part of the atmosphere?
The mesosphere
