Ellipses Flashcards
1
Q
What is the standard form for ellipses?
A
(x-h)2/ a2 + (y-k)2/ b2 = 1
2
Q
(x-h)2/ a2 + (y-k)2/ b2 = 1
What is the meaning of h, k, a, and b?
A
- (h,k) represents the center of the ellipse
- a represents the horizontal distance from center to edge of ellipse
- b represents the vertical distance from center to edge of ellipse
3
Q
(x-h)2/ a2 + (y-k)2/ b2 = 1
What determines the major and minor axis?
A
a and b. Whichever one is greater is the major axis. The smaller one of the two is the minor axis.
4
Q
Purple points on ellipse?
A
Vertices
5
Q
Vertices of an Ellipse
A
The endpoints along the major axis.
6
Q
Black points on left and right?
A
Co-Vertices
7
Q
Co-Vertices of an Ellipse
A
The endpoints along the minor axis
8
Q
Foci of an ellipse.
How do you find them?
A
- Find the difference between the denominators
- Take the square root of the difference
b2 - a2 | = c2
