Reasons why did Elizabeth not marry?
She feared that the Husband might take over the country, they might have been too Protestant or catholic making the public angry, she said she was married to England

What happened in 1601?
The Essex rebellion
List order of events from the Essex Rebellion
1- Robert Devereux had a rivalry with Robert Cecil as he was secretary of state
2- Essex had an argument with the Queen as he wanted more control and higher positions
3- The Queen sent him to Ireland to defeat a rebellion but he called a truce and as a result his monopoly of sweet wine got taken away
4- When he came back to England he burst into the Queen’s chambers and caught her without her wig, and nearly drew his sword the queen was very angry
5- He lost a lot of his wealth and was angry so gathered a lot of supporters
6- 7th Feb he took 4 privy counsellors hostage and took them to his house
8- Robert Cecil declared him a traitor and the support left
9- he was put on trial and executed on the 25th feb.
what is the papal bull?
In 1570 the Pope stated that england was excommunicated from the church and that England shouldn’t follow her laws he did this to stir up rebellion as catholics in england would have to choose between religeon and the queen

The Counterfeit Crank would bite soap so he frothed at the mouth so people would feel sympathy and give him money
What were vagabonds?
There were criminals or tricksters that would scam people for their sympathy and money, In 1567 Thomas Harman published the book Warning against Vagabonds to encourage this view
What were some causes of poverty in Elizabethan england?
1) There was a flu outbreak in 1556 that killed 200,000 people including farmers
2) There was population increase of 2.8 million to 4 million
3) There was shortage of land and housing which meant landlords could drive prices higher
4) There was more new world and Spanish exploration which drove prices higher
5) Twenty years before her reign Henry the eighth dissolved all the monasteries which meant all the nuns and servants were dismissed and the monasteries were one of the ways the poor could get shelter
What were the categories of the Poor?
1) The Deserving poor which was honest people that couldn’t work as they were ill or too old and couldn’t help their situation
2) The undeserving poor which was people seen as untrustworthy beggars that had no interest in honest work and would scam people
Why was it considered a golden age?
Art (portraits, silverware and textiles represented wealth), peace (There was political stability and military was a success), Science and technology (breakthrough of navigation and astronomy and printing press), Education (wealthy boys and some girls got education but not poor), Literature (Many great plays were written and famous authors were from that time), Buildings (Like Hardwick hall were built the first time they didn’t need to be built for defence), Exploration (England became major power and europeans discovering new lands)
Reasons why it wasn’t a golden age
There were still blood sports like dog fighting, Only a small minority were living in luxury most of the pop were poor, there was still torture and execution
What was the poor law
In 1601 the poor law was that the wealthy should be taxed to pay for care of the sick and vunerable, the fit and healthy should be given work, those who refused work were dealt with harshly like whipped or placed in house of correction.
