ANSWERS: 1, the catholic earls of northumberland and of westmore planned to free mary queen of scot’s from her imprisonment and onto the throne. they gathered an army of 6,000 soldiers in an attempt to turn england back into catholicism.
2, elizabeth found out and sent a large army to crush their rebellion. elizabeth killed 800 rebels and the 2 earls fled to scotland.
1571-the ridolfi plot.

ANSWERS: 1, ridolfi (an italian banker) planned to assassinate elizabeth and make mary queen. he had the support of king phillip of spain (II), the duke of norfolk & mary herself.
2, elizabeth’s advisor cecil uncovered this and ridolfi and the spanish ambassador were arrested and expelled from the country & norfolk was executed .
1583: the throckmorton plot.

-what was elizabeths action as a result?
ANSWERS: 1, a young catholic man, francis throckmorton organised a plan for a french army to invade england and replaced elizabeth’s with mary, this was paid for the pop and king phillip II of spain.
2, throckmorton was executed and mary was moved to the tutbury castle (staffordshire) and was isolated with no visitors.

ANSWERS: 1, sir anthony babington planned to rescue mary from jail and murder elizabeth. secret letters exchanged between the plotters & mary were discovered and provided evidence or mary’s guilt.
2, mary queen of scot’s was finally executed alongside babington and 6 other plotters.

ANSWERS: 1, france feared the might if spain and wanted to maintain their alliance with england.
2, spain were already at war with england due to the english pirates and events at the netherlands.
3, scotland had king james VI on the throne, he was elizabeth’s heir- so he took no action.
4, english catholics remained loyal to elizabeth.
