Traditional Aims of Education:
A
- teach the richest how to read, write in English and Latin.
- Very religious.
- maintain the existing social order
- mainly boy

New Humanists Aims of Education:
A
- More emphasis on Maths/Science – not religion.
- Protestants believed the bible should be in English and therefore more people needed to become literate.
- More trade and business meant more people needed to read and write

Nobility,Grammar Schools, Petty/dame Schools, Universities, Aprenticships

Nobility Schooling
A
- Learn as Latin, Greek, History, Philosophy Government and Theology (Boys)
- Learn music, dancing, needlework, horse riding and archery (girls)
- Children of noble families were often sent to another noble household to finish their education

Grammar Schools
A
- private schools set up for boys considered clever from well-off families in towns [no girls]
- Fees vary depending on the wealth of the family
- holidays only at Christmas and Easter and school days lasting for 10 hours a day.
- curriculum focused on Latin, Greek and French as well as history and philosophy

Apprenticeships
A
Apprenticeships were often available for skilled craftsmen and yeomen to prepare them to work in the family business or farm

Petty Schools
A
- Set up in teachers homes
- Learn reading, writing and basic maths
- well off boys would go onto grammar school if they did well

Dame Schools
A
- provide girls with basic education for life
- run by educated women and focused on the girls’ role as a wife

Universities
A
- two universities in England – Oxford and Cambridge
- You would go there at 14 or 15
- Mostly Founded by Tudors
- Highest level of education
