Why did Elizabeth introduce the religious settlement?
A
To to try and keep religious peace between Catholics and protestants by making a compromise. ‘ the Middle Way’.

Give three features of the act of supremacy:
A
- Elizabeth is supreme governor of the church of England. (Henry VIII was the head).
- Clergy must swear The Oath of Allegiance. This means they don’t follow the pope, they follow Elizabeth.
- regular checks to ensure rules are followed (Ecclesiastical high commission).

Give three features of the act of uniformity:

- everyone must go to church
- Services will be in English
- Churches will be decorated

Give four features of a royal injunctions:
A
- all churches must use the book of common prayer. The meaning was purposefully made in order to appease everyone.
- Who is refusing to go to church must be reported to the privy council, absentees were fined a weeks wages.
- All priests must must have a government license to preach, this stopped extremists.
- All priests must wear vestments.

What was the ordinary People’s reaction?
A
Most accepted it and attended church services, although some held on to catholic beliefs and practiced Catholicism at home.

How did the clergy react?
A
8000 out of about 10,000 accepted the religious settlement. Many bishops appointed by Mary Tudor opposed and were replaced by bishops loyal to Elizabeth.
