The Aim Of Elizabeth’s Religious Settlement
It aimed to establish a form of religion that would be accepted by both Catholics and Protestants.
It was called the ‘MIDDLE WAY’
The 3 parts to the Religious Settlement:
The Act Of Supremacy
The Act Of Uniformity
The Royal Injunctions
The Act Of Supremacy
Elizabeth became Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
All clergy and royal officials had to swear an oath of allegiance (loyalty) to Elizabeth.
Impact of the Act of Supremacy
8000 clergy out of 10,000 accepted the religious Settlement
Many catholic bishops refused the religious Settlement and had to be replaced.
The book of common prayer
Introduced a set church service to be used in ALL churches.
The clergy had to follow the prayer book wording during services or they would be punished.
The Act of uniformity
This established the appearance of churches and how religious services were to be held.
It required EVERYONE to attend church.
The Royal Injunctions
These stated all clergy were required to:
- Wear special clothes (vestments).
- Have a government license to preach.
- Keep a copy of the bible in English.
- Teach the Royal Supremacy.
FACTS on the Religious Settlement
- If you didn’t attend church you could be fined.
- Decorations were partly allowed in churches to make them loo religious.
- Priests HAD to wear vestments.
- Any members of the clergy could be punished if they didn’t follow the rules.
