why was there a large class divide
-due to closure of monasteries who cared for the the poor they were left on the street
-the government mixed cheap metals into the coins which messed with the economy
-high unemployment
how did failures in agriculture lead to poverty
-bad harvests lead to food shortages and starvation
-sheeps were kept on farms instead of crops as they required less people
-many went to cities in search for jobs
what was elizabeths response to poverty
-she had a sympathetic aproach
-deserving poor and undeserving
-built almshouses
different types of poor
-deserving poor-people who couldnt find work but wanted to
-undeserving poor-beggars who had no intention of finding work (idle poor)
how did the government treat the poor
-poor laws introduced meaning a larger focus on getting people employed
-beggars were whipped ,branded and hung
-hospitals build
-childerns homes built

-meant the rich were taxed
-healthy poor were given work if they didnt attend they were either whipped or sent to houses of correction
-the helpless-given food to live and houses
-the able bodied-considered fit to work-included children also given food and drink
-idle-whipped and forced to work
how effective were the poor laws
-only came in at the end of her reign
-seemed to work however this could have been due to the threat of the house of correction
-not entirely sucsessful
